August's Twin Supermoons Illuminate the Sky

Twin Supermoons

Hey there, astronomy enthusiasts! August has something really special in store for us this year. We are in for not one but two breathtaking supermoons! How cool is that?

Tonight, on August 1, people all around the world, including those in the United States and Saudi Arabia, will get to see the magnificent Sturgeon Moon lighting up the night sky. This Sturgeon Moon is a supermoon, which means it appears larger and brighter because it's super close to Earth. It will be just 226,000 miles away (363,300 kilometers) from us, making it look about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than a regular full moon. Thanks to the Pakistani space scientist, Dr. Jawed Iqbal, for pointing out this exciting event.

Now, here comes the really rare part. This month, we're lucky to witness two supermoons, and that's what we call a Blue Moon! It's a special term used for something that happens once in a while. The second supermoon will shine on August 30, and it's going to be the biggest and brightest one of the year. It will be super close to us at just 222,043 miles.
